Sporothrix schenckii and Sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis, which is caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii, is currently distributed throughout the world, especially in tropical and subtropical zones. Infection generally occurs by traumatic inoculation of soil, plants, and organic matter contaminated with the fungus. Certain leisure and occupational activities, such as floriculture, agriculture, mining, and wood exploitatio...

Sporothrix schenckii fungemia without disseminated sporotrichosis.

Fungemia is a rare complication of Sporothrix schenckii infection and has always been associated with disseminated sporotrichosis. We describe an immunocompetent patient with localized lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis from whose blood the fungus was isolated. A lysis-centrifugation blood culture system may have improved our ability to detect low-level S. schenckii fungemia.

Complement Activation

The complement system is the most important biochemical cascade in the blood for the recognition, opsonization, and elimination of foreign materials. To date, the leading causes of death in the United States include cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, and diabetes. New treatments are urgently needed to treat these devastating diseases and nanotechnology potentially provides n...

Complement activation by anticardiolipin antibodies.

A haemolytic assay was used to test the complement fixation ability of 16 serum samples with high concentrations of anti-cardiolipin antibodies. Fourteen patients had clinical complications usually associated with these antibodies--namely, recurrent abortions, thrombosis, or thrombocytopenia. Complement fixation by anticardiolipin antibodies was shown in only four of these patients and was not ...

Activation of the alternative complement pathway in canine normal serum by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis

The dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis is the etiological agent of paracoccidioidomycosis, a human granulomatous disease. Recently the first case of natural disease in dogs was reported. The complement system is an important effector component of humoral immunity against infectious agents. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the activation of the dog alternative complem...
